The Experience

Dragonfly Forest, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization is committed to offering children with serious illnesses and disorders the opportunity to enjoy an overnight camp experience in an environment that is safe, equipped to meet a variety of physical, medical and psychological needs, nurturing, and filled with activities that allow each child to reach their "full fun."

Dragonfly Forest is designed for children living with serious illnesses and disorders suffering physically, emotionally and psychologically not only from coping with the treatments necessary to sustain life, but also from coping with the loss of their childhood. These children spend much of their lives with adults rather than at playgrounds and with other children just being kids.

Dragonfly Forest has achieved threshold status with The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps.  The Association was created when the camp that was founded in 1988 by Paul Newman -  The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp - and four other similar camps tied to Newman's ideals, banded together to share best practices.  There are currently thirteen camps around the world that are members of the Association.  Association member camps extend a unique recreational and therapeutic camping experience to children around the world, free of charge.

What makes Dragonfly Forest so special?

  • Designed for Kids: Our camp is specifically designed for children with chronic or life threatening illnesses or disorders and allows them to safely enjoy the activities of a "traditional" camp. Between early morning swims and evening campfires, children whose lives are disrupted by their illness or disorder are transformed into just "kids." They have a chance to be with others coping with the same illness or condition and realize that they are not alone.  Hugs are part of the daily dietary requirements at Dragonfly Forest. The campers develop special relationships with each other and with their counselors.
  • A Prescription of Fun:  The prescription for the day is fun, fun, fun! Laughter, giggles, friendships, excitement and bursting energy abound.  Campers are empowered to do things they never dreamed they could do. They are infused with a spirit of accomplishment at every turn and are allowed to forget that "they have what they have."
  • Memories are Built-in:  We are in the business of creating happy memories ... we are creating experiences that will last a lifetime.  We do this because we know that a child's mind soaks up events and impressions faster then it takes them to make a mess!  But sadly, a child suffering from an illness or disorder typically has fewer chances to experience the wonders of everyday life.  Dragonfly Forest is designed to fuel children with serious illnesses or disorders with memories that can sustain and inspire.
  • Forming Strong Bonds: The camp's primary goal is to help each child to feel like a regular kid.  At camp they will form strong bonds with the other kids so they will leave their "week in paradise" with a unique network of friends.
