It is a series of social/recreation clubs run by highly-trained interns at college campus’ around the country.
Dragonfly Forest worked closely with Sylvia van Meerten to develop The Spectrum after-school year round program. This program is built using the core training from our camp program for the counselors, and our afternoon free select model for fun program for the participants. Sylvia lives and works in Asheville, NC and saw a huge need for engaging, motivating recreation choices for youth and teens with social challenges.
Please describe our program as low pressure, FUN and full of choice when you speak to your child about them. We call them clubs, because ‘clubs’ sound fun, while ‘social groups’ sometimes sound like therapy, which isn’t always fun. The program is certainly socially oriented, but it is focused on activities that kids enjoy, not on rote practice of specific social skills. Make sure your participant knows when the groups will happen. We find that using a calendar, and writing the club on the appropriate days works really well. You can also show your child pictures of the program that can be found on our blog.
Group members can bring items that interest them, such as ipods and hand-held video games, but The Spectrum (Dragonfly Forest) is not responsible for keeping track of these items.
Please let us know if a participant will be absent from our program by emailing or giving us a call or a text.
If inclement weather closes the campus on which The Spectrum is located, then our program will also be canceled. Please check the college or university website for weather closings.
