Children with autism need an inspiring place to practice their social skills, all year long. Our after-school camp is designed to be fun and to improve the quality of life for kids with autism and other social needs.
Our after-school camp will build confidence and provide social opportunities. We find that when children with special needs are involved in well-structured group activities which interest them, they are less anxious, and more motivated to increase their social skills repertoire. Our well-trained counselors teach social skills in applicable moments, when children seem ready to learn, but we don’t make a big deal about it. Our focus is on having fun, being safe, and helping our campers participate as full members of our community.
The locations of The Spectrum program are:
The Spectrum happens at UNCA just north of downtown Asheville. Our talented interns offer creative activities once per week on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30pm-5:30pm. The Spectrum is an afterschool club that occurs in 6-week sessions, for $85 (total).
Here is how it works: We train our interns to lead awesomely interesting activities and design several modifications for them to please a variety of kids. Each time our club meets, the participants gather and the interns present short ‘commercials’ for 3 or 4 great activity choices. Participants choose which activity they feel like doing that day. The next time the club meets, the structure is the same, but the activity choices are different.
We are so excited to present our first ever summer Spectrum program! We will meet on UNCA's campus from 2-4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the month of July. This program costs $200 and meets twice per week, for two hours, for a total of 4 weeks. We will follow the general format of the afterschool program, with commercials and structured choices, but kids will get to make more choices and be together longer. Register early, so we know how many kids to expect!
